I’d like some more Serial, please.

I love listening to podcasts on my way to work. One of my favorite podcasts to listen to every week is This American Life.   But right now, my download-as-soon-as-it’s-up-on-Thursday podcast is Serial; produced and narrated by Sarah Koenig.

Right now, they’re on their second season, and it’s about Bowe Bergdahl; a soldier who left his outpost OP Mest, and ultimately ran into the arms of the Talaban.  People searched frantically for the missing soldier and when he turns up there are mixed feelings about his homecoming.  She actually speaks with the Talaban.

Just writing about it makes me excited to hear episode 4, but that won’t come out until January 7th!  Even Sarah Koenig gets a Holiday Break.

I’m still more in love with Season 1.  I think it’s because Sarah interviewed the main subject, Adnan Syed, herself, and she doesn’t interview Bowe.

Season 1 is about the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, a high school senior.  Six weeks after Hae goes missing, detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder.  But much of the evidence against Adnan is not checking out.   Much of the podcast is through phone calls to Adnan while in prison. She’s digging up old feelings, and emotions that he’s tried so hard not to revisit.  After 15 plus years in prison, Adnan has accepted his fate.   Sarah bounces back and forth between fact checking and research, talking to old classmates, and Adnan’s family, all while trying to answer the question, “Who killed Hae?”

I strongly suggest you listen to both seasons if you have any time.  They are incredibly interesting and entertaining!
